On Monday, Apple released updated versions of the iMac, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air and Macbook.

The world got a first look at the new iPad Pro… and witnessed the surprise arrival of the iMac Pro.

As expected, the big reveal was  iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra… and Apple did not disappoint.

This is a long post… so scroll down until you hit a headline in green that interests you.

Undoubtedly, the most eye-popping example of iOS 11’s new abilities was the Augmented Reality demo created by Peter Jackson’s company Wingnut… and shown on a plain old iPad.

Watch this now. Click the full-screen button on the bottom right for full effect.

… One more thing… in December we get HomePod. What pod? Keep reading…

Don’t let any of this freak you out!

If you live in Los Angeles… I can come to your home and install any of these new Apple gizmos or sit down and explain how iOS 11 or macOS High Sierra works. If you live outside Los Angeles… you may be screwed. Still… I do take calls 🙂

Apple HomePod and Apple Music

What the hell is HomePod?

Apple call it an intelligent speaker… but it’s obviously their response to Amazon Echo and Google Home.

As a speaker, the technology is impressive on paper, but we’ll have to wait to find out how well it works in a real home setting.

Apple HomePod Beam Forming Technology

Surprise, Surprise… HomePod has Siri as a digital assistant that can help you set alarms, add Calendar events, check the weather, control lights, etc.,. You get the picture.

In some ways it appears to be a combination of the UE Boom and Amazon Echo… with an edge on both.

Without seeing, hearing or touching the HomePod first hand… here are my impressions.

  • As a digital assistant, HomePod is already embedded in an Apple ecosystem that includes your Mac, iPad and iPhone. This means that there are potentially hundreds of commands that could be voice activated.
  • HomePod will address the shortage of Apple related voice commands available in Amazon Echo and Google Home.
  • It will integrate easily with other Apple components.
  • I will fit in Apple User’s comfort zone.

HomePod intelligent Siri control

  • Personally, I think it’s ugly… maybe that’s just me.
  • It’s normal size for a speaker, but way oversized for a digital assistant. Try putting this on a nightstand. We may have to wait for HomePod Mini.
  • At $349, it’s not overpriced considering it’s abilities, but Apple will have to work hard to show consumers why they shouldn’t buy a cheaper Amazon Echo or Google Home that “seem to do the same thing”.

HomePod is available in December at a price of $349. Explore HomePod.
