MONITOR

Connecting a monitor to a MacBook provides all the benefits of a desktop while retaining the portability of a laptop. We see more and more clients opting for this combination every year.

The Dell UltraSharp U2720Q is a 4K 27″ monitor with a USB-C port that connects the display and powers your Mac at the same time. A flexible stand allows the Dell to be placed in landscape or portrait orientation.

It’s not cheap, but it works well with the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

KEYBOARD

Logitech MX Keys is a full featured backlit bluetooth keyboard that’s designed specifically for the Mac.

• The MX backlights each individual key and the intensity can be adjusted.
• 3 designated keys let you quickly switch the keyboard between a Mac, iPad, or iPhone.
• The MX keys are concave; a small design feature that helps minimize mistakes and makes typing is more enjoyable.

The Logitech MX Keys is a worthwhile substitute for Apple’s Magic Keyboard. Highly recommended.

SPEAKERS

If you have a Mac Mini or an uber-expensive Mac Pro you’re stuck with a tiny speaker that makes a sound like a mouse being strangled.

The answer is the Bose Companion 2 Series III. They produce remarkably crisp sound with a variety of music. Bass it tight, but without a dedicated subwoofer it’s not deep enough for music that relies on a heavy pulsing beat. Check out our review.

I keep giving them as gifts . . . and get no complaints.

BLU-RAY, DVD & CD READER

Apple’s DVD/CD reader does not read Blu-Rays, performs poorly and is expensive.

I use the Pioneer BDR-XD07UHD. It connects using a standard USB 3.0 cable, requires no proprietary software to work, and plays and burns all the major formats.

Burning CD’s in Apple Music is a breeze, but you will need Blu-Ray player software to watch Blu-Rays on the Mac. I use Blu-Ray Player Pro.

SUPER FAST BACKUP

The Samsung T7 Solid State Drive is fast, reliable and hardly bigger than a credit card. Perfect for backups, data migration and sharing files. Highly recommended.

When choosing drive size, get at least double the storage you are currently using.

Cloud backup services let you access lost data when you’re traveling, if your equipment gets stolen or . . .  worst case scenario, the house burns down.

UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY

A Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) uses a battery to provide power during an outage. Depending on the load, you usually get between 10 – 30 minutes, to shut down devices properly to avoid data loss or equipment damage.

I use the CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD Intelligent LCD UPS System, 1500VA/900W with 12 outlets. All provide surge protection with 6 providing battery backup.

It’s not cheap, but is well worth the expense considering the peace of mind it brings.
