Cleanup is a new tool that removes distracting background objects, blemishes, and other unwanted elements from your photos. It’s incredibly effective and easy to use.

Cleanup

The photo above was taken at the Academy Museum. In the first image, several people are in the background, standing or sitting on chairs. Cleanup removed these folks and produced the second image in less than 30 seconds.

On The iPhone

  • Open Photos.
  • Select an image.
  • Tap the slider button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the Cleanup icon on the right.
  • You may see a dialog box that says ‘Preparing Cleanup’ as the tool analyzes the image. If this is the first time you’ve used Cleanup, it needs to download.
  • Once the tool is ready, use your finger to tap, brush, or circle what you want to remove.
  • If you don’t get the desired results, try again. Sometimes, it takes several attempts to remove an item from a picture.
  • When you’re finished, tap Done.

On The Mac

  • Open Photos.

  • Click the Edit button in the top right-hand corner.
  • Click the Clean Up button on the bar above the images. If this is the first time you’ve used Cleanup, it will need to download.
  • Choose the size of the Clean Up brush using the slider in the top right-hand corner.
  • Use the mouse or trackpad to brush, or circle what you want to remove.
  • When you’re finished, click Done.

How Do I Get Back The Original Image?

Changes you make using Cleanup do not damage the original photo. If you want to reverse the changes you made:

On the iPhone, open the photo, tap the slider button at the bottom, and tap the red Revert button in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

On the Mac, open the photo, click the Edit button in the top right-hand corner, click the ‘Revert To Original’ button in the top left-hand corner, and then click Done.

Cleanup is available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models running iOS 18.1 or later, and on any M-series Mac running macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later.

Have fun 🙂
